Credit Card Not Working
While Japan is becoming more cashless, cash is still king in many places. Here's what to do.
Protect Yourself with Travel Insurance
Medical costs in Japan can be very high. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before your trip.
1
Try a different terminal
Some smaller shops only accept Japanese cards. Try convenience store ATMs (7-Eleven ATMs accept most foreign cards) or Japan Post ATMs.
2
Contact your card issuer
Your bank may have blocked the transaction for fraud prevention. Call the number on the back of your card to unblock.
3
Withdraw cash at ATMs
Seven Bank ATMs (in 7-Eleven), Japan Post ATMs, and some AEON ATMs accept Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus, and Plus. Available in English, Chinese, Korean.
4
IC card / QR payment
Suica (IC card) works on trains and at many shops. Load it with cash at ticket machines. PayPay and other QR payments require a Japanese phone number.
