Train Has Stopped

Trains in Japan are reliable, but disruptions happen. Here's what to do.

1

Check the reason for the delay

Look at the station announcement boards. Signs in English, Chinese, and Korean are often available at major stations. JR East and Tokyo Metro apps also provide real-time updates.

2

Get a delay certificate

Ask station staff for a '遅延証明書' (Chien Shomeisho - delay certificate). This is free and can be used to explain tardiness to hotels or businesses.

3

Use alternative transport

In Tokyo, consider using subway lines, buses, or ride-hailing apps (GO, DiDi, Uber). During major disruptions, free 'furikae' (振替輸送 - substitute transport) is available on nearby lines.

4

Wait it out

Most disruptions are resolved within 1-2 hours. Station waiting areas have seating and vending machines. Staff will announce updates.
